Detection of sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia and Human Papilloma Virus which can cause cervical cancer will soon be more effective and user-friendly thanks to a new device called Colli-Pee, designed by Novosanis. This device will be showcased during Design Week as from October 17 in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Researchers of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute (VAXINFECTIO) from the University of Antwerp discovered several years ago that the first part of the urine, the so-called first-void, provides an excellent sample for detection of sexually transmitted infections. This inspired Lara Biekens (student product development at UAntwerpen) to develop a non-invasive device able to collect first-void urine.

In 2012, the so called “2pi” project was further executed by 3 master students at UAntwerpen: Hanne De Bauw (Product Development), Tina Van Hove (Nursing and Midwifery) and Ragnar Dienske (Sociology). This multi-disciplinary project was coordinated by Vanessa Vankerckhoven (now CEO at Novosanis) as Innovation Manager at the University of Antwerp. The project was also supported by Voxdale, a design & engineering company responsible for developing first prototypes. The result, the current Colli-Pee device, will be now be on display during Design Week under the auspices of Biënnale Interieur 2014 from October 17 till October 26.

An external jury has elected Hanne De Bauw’s work as one of the highlights of the exposition.

“After winning the Belgian James Dyson Award for VAX-ID last month, this again is a very nice recognition for a Novosanis product”, says Koen Beyers, Chief Technology Officer at Novosanis. “Hanne designed a device with an intelligent architecture, easily producible in large numbers next to being very user friendly for both men and women. This must have convinced the jury”.

Colli-Pee should obtain its CE label soon. Novosanis expects to launch this device by the end of 2014.
